Through the Streetjibe blog, youth providers, practitioners, agencies, community groups and youth could contribute their voices to discussions related to the reduction of youth poverty and homelessness in York Region. It helped strengthen the relationships and communication amongst diverse stakeholders with the common interest of reducing youth poverty and homelessness in York Region.
As of the end of the Streetjibe project in 2009, the blog has been discontinued. But you can still access its stories and resources to continue the learning process in your community.
addressing youth poverty in York region
As a global leader in creating and facilitating solutions to youth poverty around the world, Street Kids sought to apply its expertise within Canada through Streetjibe, a three-year program that took place in York Region from 2006 – 2009.
Youth poverty and homelessness rates continue to rise in York Region despite no lack of expertise, dedicated workers and well-run programs. Our three year pilot project funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation brought diverse local youth service organizations and staff together to develop solutions and improve the lives of youth, especially those experiencing poverty and homelessness.
Streetjibe built on the strengths of our community and the collective desire of community residents and organizations to reduce youth poverty in York Region. Its workshops allowed youth workers and others working with youth in York Region to build new skills and explore issues related to their services. Throughout these interactive workshops, Streetjibe utilized the assets of individuals and organizations to share, learn and collaborate.
Streetjibe aspired to create a cultural shift in the way individuals and groups develop new skills and work together so young people will have improved access to opportunities and resources.

There is so much learning to be done about this population and I feel that with those interested in this initiative, we can only plunge forward. Learning new skills, unravelling old/ present issues, providing guidance and simply making sure that youth are being heard. It's all about them!
