In April of 2010 Street Kids began the monumental task of selecting 8 candidates from over 180 applications for the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP). After many hours of resumé screening and interviews we came up with a team of highly qualified, enthusiastic interns ready to embark on a 10 month placement.

Street Kids International will be recruiting for a second round of internships in early 2011, updated details will be available on this page at that time. IYIP is financially supported by the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). eligibility

All interns should have language skills relevant to the posting location, or language acquisition skills. Interns must also demonstrate the ability to adapt to new cultures and climates, experience living or working overseas, and be able to prove skills related to adaptability, enterprise, leadership and patience. Interns will be expected to “hit the ground running” and be able to perform at a high level with minimal supervision.

Experience and skills in facilitation and research, knowledge of gender and international development issues, understanding of monitoring and evaluation and experience with youth are also required. Interns will be responsible for various public engagement activities, relating their experiences to the Canadian public through social media, presentations and forums.

To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program, an intern must be:

  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • A post-secondary graduate - graduate of a degree or diploma program from a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP
  • Out of school
  • Between the ages of 19 and 30
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

Kenya
youth entreprenership support officer

The intern will work with Make a Better World Kenya (MABWOK) to strengthen their youth entrepreneurship programming and develop a fuller understanding of international development in the context of youth livelihood and entrepreneurship.

MABWOK reaches an average of 350 youth annually through training and support for youth savings groups. MABWOK works with the Kenyan government through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports where they have secured a loan to support vocational training.

MABWOK currently supports programs in 3 areas:

  • Children Welfare and Youth Empowerment Programme
  • Youth Education and Training Programme
  • Environment and Sanitation Programme

Job Description

  • Provide logistical support for implementation of youth entrepreneurship training program
  • Collaborate with MABWOK staff to co-facilitate youth entrepreneurship training Provide support for IT and literacy training
  • Review youth business plans and provide assistance with loan application process
  • Provide support for the development of Savings and Loan clubs.
  • Provide support for youth to access global online networks for business start-up funding.
  • Take part in daily field documentation and associated reporting

Bolivia
youth entrepreneurship support officer

This internship will strengthen the Bolivian institutions team (CDEA) through the exchange of knowledge and experience pertaining to youth development, and will further Street Kids International's programming of accompanied livelihood training.

This training will pay particular attention to the ongoing development of an ‘accompaniment’ aspect to youth program delivery, and further develop Street Kids’ ability to work with teachers and educators to respond to the needs of marginalized youth.

This project will focus on the use and enhancement of innovative educational tools to improve the quality of life and social conditions of marginalized youth and foster self-sustainability.

CDEA operates out of La Paz and seeks to develop initiatives, actions, and strategies oriented to improve the quality of life and strengthen the potential of populations in social disadvantage. CDEA has directed its efforts to promoting diversity, equality, universal human rights and human values through the development and implementation of innovative, educational training programs for both formal and non-formal streams. Fluency in Spanish is a requirement for this position.

Ethiopia
Youth training coordinator

This internship will strengthen the Emmanuel Development Association’s (EDA) capacity by providing support to entrepreneurship training modules and development of a peer mentorship training manual.

The intern will also be responsible for monitoring and evaluation of the training and gender analysis. EDA envisions a country where children have the opportunity to develop their capabilities so that they can participate equally in the development of their communities, regions and country irrespective of ethnic group, social class or gender. 

EDA assists communities in the following areas: 

  • Education and Training
  • Integrated Community Health and Sanitation
  • Gender and Women Empowerment and Advocacy Work

Since its establishment, EDA has been at the forefront of community development, with over 11 years of experience in designing and implementing integrated community development for children, women and employment programmes for youth in Ethiopia.

Job Description

  • Coordination and delivery of youth entrepreneurship training modules including Street Kids International's own Street Business Toolkit, and Street Banking Toolkit.
  • Lead the process of adapting Street Kids Business Mentor training to create a peer mentoring training
  • Adaptation of the written manual and other materials
  • Report on the process of adaptation and lessons learned and recommendations following delivery of the peer mentor training
  • Coordination of matching of youth with mentors and provision of ongoing support
  • Provide support in monitoring and evaluation of the Street Kids/EDA partnership programme across Debre Berhan and Addis Ababa areas, including supporting the EDA Project Coordinator in design of the programme evaluation, data collection, gender analysis and reporting
  • Ensure that innovations in youth livelihood support are shared through worldwide network of partners and Master Trainers

Nepal
youth entrepreneurship innovation officer

This internship will strengthen SathSath’s team through the exchange of knowledge and experience pertaining to youth development, and will further Street Kids International's programming of financial sustainability and livelihood training for Nepali youth.

Training and support will pay particular attention to the ongoing development of a ‘practice business’ aspect to youth program delivery, and further develop Street Kids’ ability to work with teachers and educators to respond to the needs of marginalized youth.

SathSath assists children and youth to develop skills, build confidence and learn how to use their rights in society. SathSath operates three drop-in-centers in Kathmandu, these centers offer a safe environment for children and youth to learn, play and receive support and services to improve their quality of life.

Tanzania
Youth ENTREPRENEURSHIP OFFICER

The intern will be a member of the children’s program staff group at Mkombozi, providing technical assistance and capacity building to the staff and children’s program coordinator in developing and implementing methodologies and processes for delivering youth livelihood interventions.

The intern will facilitate youth’s participation in program processes and interventions meant to improve their livelihood. The intern will advise on reviews of systems and their compatible implementation in addition to facilitating the development of tools and techniques to enable staff members to achieve quality interventions in youth livelihood and gender inclusive programming. Mkombozi (meaning "liberator" or "emancipator" in Swahili) is the leading child-focused agency in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions, using education, research, advocacy, and outreach to help vulnerable children and youth to grow in mind, body and spirit.

Mkombozi captures local potential through learning and reflection and acts as a catalyst for holistic development.  Mkombozi envisions a world where all children and youth are prioritized and can access opportunities to become well rounded, inquiring and productive people who are working towards a more just and democratic society.

Job Description

  • Facilitate capacity building for social and street educators on effective delivery of youth livelihood services
  • Work with educators in exploring, reviewing and developing tools and tactics for delivering youth entrepreneurship modules, Mentorship tool kit finalization and job preparation
  • Facilitate development of methodologies, processes and tools for researching and evaluating the impact of working with youth entrepreneurship modules
  • Facilitate exploration and exhaustive exploitation of mentorship opportunities that can be provided to the youth by community volunteers engaged in businesses and various forms of entrepreneurship
  • Work with street educators in integrating entrepreneurship model in Mobile School intervention
  • Work with social educators in integrating entrepreneurship modules in family reunification

India
Street Youth Job Readiness Coordinator

This internship will strengthen the Project Concern International India (PCI/India) team by facilitating a process whereby there is overall development of youth beneficiaries including vocational and life skills and enhancement of street youth programs.

The Street Source training will develop youth workers ability to respond to the needs of marginalized youth. This project will focus on the use and enhancement of life skills educational tools to improve the quality of life and social conditions of marginalized youth and foster self-sustainability in PCI’s programs.

PCI/India has been active since 1997 and is an affiliate of Project Concern International. The India country office is located in New Delhi and has five regional offices around the country. PCI/India has developed a diverse portfolio of programs in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support; polio eradication; water and sanitation; micro-enterprise and micro finance; humanitarian assistance and children at risk.

Philippines
Street Youth Job Readiness Coordinator

The intern’s development of the English Proficiency Curriculum and the Street Source Curriculum in partnership with Street Kids International and Virlanie Foundation, Inc. will contribute to the self sufficiency and independent living for the youth that Virlanie works with. Virlanie offers a number of community outreach programs that provide social support and education to the children and families of Manila's poorest neighbourhoods. The Virlanie Foundation, Inc. (VFI) is a private non-sectarian child caring institution in Metro Manila, Philippines. The foundation serves children found living in the streets as well as those referred by other institutions. Virlanie works to prevent the future physical and psychological abuse of children. It envisions empowered children who see a brighter future for themselves. 

Job Description

  • Collaborates with the YAP Coordinator and the Magellan Learning Center Coordinator on the development of the curriculum based on the needs of the young adults
  • Drafts components of the curriculum and presents to the Team for review and approval.
  • Pilot components of the curriculum with young adults
  • Prepare materials and other training activities in collaboration with YAPC and MLCC.
  • Prepare monthly reports highlighting the stages of the development of the curriculum.
  • Monitor the pilot implementation of the curriculum and prepare reports
  • Monitors programming for gender inclusion and ensures curriculum meets the needs of both men and women

Sierra Leone
POST-conflict youth entreprenership monitoring and evaluation officer

The intern will work with Hands Empowering The Less Privileged (HELP) Salone to strengthen their youth entrepreneurship programming and assist in monitoring and evaluation of youth entrepreneurship activities. HELP Salone in Sierra Leone is a local non-profit working with marginalised youth, women and children in the most deprived and underserved communities in Sierra Leone. HELP has a wealth of experience in implementing diverse development programs in Sierra Leone in areas such as water and sanitation, skills training income generation for women, micro-finance, youth support and food security.

  • Assist in researching local microfinance initiatives
